Prom Dress Nightmares

It’s almost February, and in my country, that means it’s Prom season. Yes, as cliche as it is, Prom in my country happens just before or after Valentine’s Day. I have no idea why, it’s just the way it goes ever since I can remember. I’ve had the misfortune opportunity to attend 4 Proms and through all 4 of them, I looked H-I-D-E-O-U-S. Hideous.
Yes, that’s right, we had 4 of these socials, 2 in Grade school and 2 more in High School.

When I was in 5th Grade, I think my Grandmother was inspired by Shinedress when she picked out my dress. Unfortunately, it didn’t look as awesome as Scarlet’s. I ended up looking like a puffed pastry because my dress was, of all the colors in the world, white.

I will not post a picture of my dress, I’m brave, but I’m not that brave and if you’ve seen it, You won’t believe I’m an expert on anything Fashion or Beauty related, HAHAHA!

I learned my lesson in 6th Grade, so I wore a casual short dress that had huge ass shoulder pads. Oh my glob. Needless to say, it was another hideous outfit.

You’d think as I grew older I’d have known better, but no. In Junior year, I’ve decided to just have a dress customized because I couldn’t find one that fit me perfectly and that complimented my then super skinny body (think skin and bones, not attractive!). I designed it to also compliment my body type, so I chose an Empire cut dress that would then flow into my body and give the illusion that I have curves. Unfortunately, the tailor who did my dress was blind not that good at customizing dresses from scratch, so I ended up with a spaghetti strap, straight cut royal blue dress with a very high side slit that was complimented by a flower that was sewn using the excess fabric. I looked like a blue pole. My very short hair didn’t help much. It was another failed attempt at looking fabulous for Prom.

This was how I envisioned my Junior Prom dress to look like, it turned out anything but!

And then Senior year came and I was so determined to look awesome. I did. I wore my aunt’s Ash blue bridesmaid’s dress. It looked fabulous, but I still looked off. This time, I blame the hairstylist and make up artist. For some reason, she styled my then short hair ala Medusa’s hair style and then my make up looked really bad, my face was too white and my lips too red and my eyes too blue. It was just awful. If only I had half of the make up skills I had now then, perhaps I would have rocked that last year of Prom. If only indeed!

Today, pre teens and teenagers have it easy, what with the internet being around. It’s easier to look for a dress that is just perfect for your skin tone, your body type and even your budget. You can search a variety of types of dresses, from floor length Prom dresses to short cocktail type Prom dresses with just a few taps on the keyboard.

Now that Chakai is in 5th Grade, I’m going to make sure that she won’t have to experience what I did before. I will make sure she has an amazing dress and I don’t care where in the world I get it, I just know that it will be unique, it will compliment her skin tone and it will make her feel proud to show pictures of her Prom for years and years to come. I sure wish I knew about DressFirst back then, I could have looked awesome.
